Advertising for people who don't like advertising

Maybe you´re in the industry.
Maybe you´re a client.
Maybe you´re a student.
Maybe you just hate brands pulling some Clockwork Orange style brainwashing while you´re trying to watch Australian Master Chef.

This is a film about a book about a communications agency that doubts most communications. The agency´s name is KesselsKramer, and its scepticism has led to a style of advertising which aims to be human and truthful.
Sometimes, it succeeds.
Sometimes, it doesn´t.
In this book, KesselsKramer documents its creative efforts, offers advice, and reaches out to sceptics whom it admires. Among them: Alex Bogusky, Stefan Sagmeister, Steve Henry, Anthony Burrill, Hans Aarsman and Mark Fenske. You can buy it here.

The Start a Party campaign firmly established J&B as a party whisky.

For the next campaign, J&B asked KesselsKramer to develop a participation campaign.

This new J&B City Remix campaign encourages consumers around the world to Start a Party by hearing the party potential and turning their city into a dance track. A natural next step from inviting people to see the party potential anywhere.

We joined forces with producer Russ Chimes to create a unique international music project for the party whisky J&B. J&B City Remix has been launched across 12 countries to inspire people all over the world to make music in an unconventional way. This J&B initiative is designed specifically to celebrate global cities and the energy that makes them special.

Taking inspiration from ambient city sounds, Chimes created a unique party track composed of a mix between the vibrancy of urban metropolises and a memorable bass line. To help bring this concept to life, we created a music video and a TVC to accompany the track, showing how everyday sounds can lead to great music.

Consumers are encouraged to help create their local music track, by uploading their city sounds with this special J&B app. A local DJ will use these sounds to create a dancetrack, which will be launched at J&B parties around the globe in 2012:

"Message in the dark"

- Concept, Art Direction, Design
- Made at KesselsKramer
- Produced by We are just

Our brief was to give Ben customers something for Christmas. In a time where everyone is talking about Santa and Zwarte Piet we decided to base our idea on the insight that December is the darkest month of the year.

We invited Ben customers to a website where they could draw messages using the display light from their cell phone. A fun tool to spread warmth and light on a dark cold winter night.

The light spread on social media and potential customers picked up on the Ben light tool website.

Screen recording of the website:

Use the display light from your mobile to draw a message:

Send your light message to family and friends:

A few of the thousands of light messages spread in december:

On the website you could read the manifest, watch the films, sign an online petition, get information about the hundreds of planned protest around the country and spread the word with twitter screams.

With the microphone activated you could make your voice count by screaming at the website.
A level bar would measure the volume. The higher the volume the more colorful website:

"I am"

- Concept, Art Direction, Design
- D&AD Student In Book 09
- Published in Grundbog for Art Directors

Fcuk asked us to create a range of platforms that could redefine their brand. We gave the people who wear the clothes the freedom to decide what fcuk should be?

We created the “I am” campaign where the fashion interpretation was up to the individual.
Simply because the fcuk clothes are nothing without you.

To create traffic to fcukiam.com we hired actors pretending to be model scouts.
Their job was to “find” young people on the streets and give them a business card:

Directing traffic to fcukiam.com using banners:

Turn on your webcam and appear on fcukiam.com
Play around and find your favourite look and outfit:

You can easily try out new clothes, move them around and scale them to make them fit:

Click “Make banner” and appear in the banner you entered from:

You are now the fcuk model until the next person clicks on the banner:

To enter the fcuk I AM competition you have to create a facebook fan page and get the most fans before the deadline. The prize is a modeling contract for the print campaign. By using facebook, the competitors are given an easy opportunity to spread a message to their network for support:

On the fcuk site you can follow the I AM models, get rankings and personal info:

The top 20 winning fcuk I AM models will be in a professional
photo shoot for the print campaign and lookbook:

Mirrors are removed from the dressing rooms and installed as store windows:

The mirrors are see-through from the outside - as used in interrogation rooms:

We installed cameras in adshells to make them into large “photo booth” commercials.
In this way the viewer can instantly become part of the campaign:

"Undo evil - little by little "

- Concept, Art Direction, Design
- Made at Mom! Look what I made (Proposal)

The Challange:
To build up anticipation and knowledge prior to the release of a new computer game.

The Game:
In a plan to take over the world The Evil Samurai Warlord uses ancient Kuji Magic to turn innocent forest animals into mindless Samurai warriors. To restore peace and harmony you must embark on
a journey to undo all the evil.

What we did:
We made a campaign that was part of the game. We got people involved in the game before it was released by giving them an opportunity to get an extra character. Something special to look forward to.

Movie leading people to the campaign site:

Online people could become part of the campaign by trying to get an extra character,
not available before being unlocked in the actual game:

In banners the movie used the entire site and gave one of the five keys as well:

Whenever a key is retrieved a lock opens:

Other banners were interactive and required that one find and use Kuji Magic:

By using the microphone together with augmented reality, people could both blow away
evil, trying the effect of the "Wall of wind" Kuji Magic, and get a key:

With QR codes it was possible to undo the hostile takeover of frosties.
Afterwards players were rewarded with a key and a happy tiger:

In stores the fight continued. By purchasing the game you would get another key:

Now enjoy mini ninjas with an extra character:

Hans Brinker Budget Trophy

Every year students from eight top european universities will face off like latter-day gladiators (only with paintbrushes instad of tridents, and no lions) . They will scuffle, they will strive, they will strain - but eventually one true champion will step onto a slightly rickety Brinker toilet bowl and claim their treasure:

The Hans Brinker Midlife Book

- Published by KesselsKramer publishing

A book dedicated to everyone who made the Hans Brinker Budget Hotel, Amsterdam, the world's very best worst hotel for forty years:

A few selected years from the last 4 decades at the Brinker hotel:

1974
When it came time to re-style the Brinker's interior, the hotel called upon some of Holland's most respected interior designers:

1975
Question: You run a somewhat dubious youth hostel in Amsterdam. Much to your astonishment, said youth hostel is becoming more popular than you ever thought possible. More consumers want more beds and you, naturally, want to make more money. What do you do?:

1977
Functional art is a big part of the Hans Brinker:

1992
Kessels is Rob's third choice for a job nobody wants
- designing stationery for the obscure youth hostel. And so it begins:

1993
It´s time for a good thorough "cleaning" at the Brinker:

2002
Continuing its progressive policies, the Brinker pro-actively enacted a smoking ban six years before the nationwide ban went into effect:
